DISTRICT CONVENTION 2018 SOUTH WEST ROCKS

19th-21st October 2018

Hosted by the Lions Club of South West Rocks

Arrangements for the 2018 Lions 201N1 District Convention at South West Rocks are well underway.

The Convention Committee hopes to make it a convention to remember and extend a warm invitation to all Lions to come to South West Rocks from 19th to the 21st October 2018.

Registrations will start on Friday 19th at South West Rocks Country Club which will also be the venue for all convention activities on Saturday and Sunday.

On Friday there will be golf, bowls and croquet on offer followed by a Meet and Greet at the Surf Club in the evening.

The theme for the Saturday night banquet is “Relax By The Beach”. This will provide a great opportunity to don colourful beach attire and will be a perfect match for the warm subtropical climate at “The Rocks”.

South West Rocks are situated on beautiful Trial Bay at the mouth of the Macleay River. The protected beaches and perfect sand make them a popular spot for families.

The landscape is dominated by the headlands of Smokey Cape which was named by Cook in 1770 because of aboriginal fires burning there at the time. Cook also named South West Rocks as that was the direction of the rocks in the bay from his ship. Trial Bay gets its name from the brig "The Trial” stolen by convicts from Sydney and found abandoned on the beach here.

South West Rocks offers stunning coastal scenery and a visit to the lighthouse at the southern end of Smokey Cape is well worthwhile, especially for those who climb the extra steps right up to the lighthouse. At the northern end, there is Trial Bay Gaol, built as a Public Works Prison in the 1880’s and later used as an internment camp in WW1. In more recent years it has been used as a setting for several movies. The Kiosk there is a popular spot for coffee and lunches.

The town itself has a population of 5000 with a number of boutique shops and a variety of restaurants. Back Creek which is also becoming a very popular location has the recently opened Lions Disabled Access which provides easy access to the water for people who don’t want to battle the surf. Tasty Treats coffee shop there is a great spot to relax with coffee and cake.
